Update (January 3rd 2020):

Please note that plans for this event are currently under reconsideration due to the illness of our proposed speaker Libby Purves. We hope Libby will be recovered and well enough to fulfil the engagement later in the year, and wish her well. Meanwhile we are holding the booking for March 20th at the Royal Harwich Yacht Club, and seeking an alternative speaker. We aim to make a decision, and an announcement, by the end of January.

Brian Hammett, who died on 20 September 2018, was a consummate sailor and a leading member of many yachting organisations, as well as a published Arthur Ransome authority. His memory is to be honoured by the first of what we hope will become an annual series of Memorial Talks.

This first talk is organised by Nancy Blackett Trust, of which Brian Hammett was a vice-president, together with the Arthur Ransome Society (TARS), where he had been Eastern Region chairman, as well as the Cruising Association (Suffolk Section) and the Royal Harwich Yacht Club.

The talk will take place at the Royal Harwich Yacht Club on Friday 20th March, 2020, at 6.30pm, followed by a dinner at the Club for those who wish to stay on. Doors will open at 6.00pm, while the dinner starts at 8.00pm.

The speaker will be Libby Purves, another famous East Coast sailor, who has recently been appointed President of the Arthur Ransome Society. The title of her talk is A Serious Kind of Joy: Sailing and the Salt of Reality.

Tickets, at £10 for the talk only, or £24.50 for the talk and dinner, will be available online via the RHYC website from January 3rd 2020.

We can’t reserve tickets in advance, but we will send you a reminder before booking opens if you subscribe to our special mailing list below:
