Today is the 75th anniversary of the publication of “Secret Water”, the eighth book in Arthur Ransome’s “Swallows and Amazons” series of children’s books.
The story is set in the Walton Backwaters and is the second book to feature Nancy Blackett as the Goblin, this time in a cameo role.
There have been a number of different editions of “Secret Water” since 1939, but the latest is a paperback published by Vintage Books, with a cover illustration by Pietari Posti, a large, clear, easy-to-read typeface, all of Arthur Ransome’s original illustrations, plus quizzes, games and additional information in ‘Backstory’ sections.
Earlier this year Dame Ellen MacArthur, patron of the Nancy Blackett Trust, said:
“It’s hard to imagine those words were written 75 years ago, as the stories and adventures which they describe ring true as strongly today as they ever did”
