The University of Cumbria is hosting a free public talk about Arthur Ransome in Ambleside on Tuesday 4th April.
Presented by Professor Sally Bushell of Lancaster University, this talk considers a spatial approach to children’s literature through the example of Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons series, defining the concept of “PlaySpace” as a shared space of play and growth by adults and children and exploring how Ransome presents it within and across his Lake District books through the maps at the front, before examining the importance of the endpaper maps and of map-making in general for imaginative literary space and place.
- “Arthur Ransome and the Lake District as PlaySpace” is on Tuesday 4th April at 6:30pm at the University of Cumbria in Rydal Road, Ambleside, LA22 9BB.
- Tickets are free and available here – booking is needed for ordering post-talk tea and coffee refreshments.
