The all-day event has been organised by writer and lecturer Chris Routledge, in association with The Arthur Ransome Trust. He also staged a similar readings of Swallows and Amazons on the shore of Coniston Water in September 2017, Pigeon Post at Coniston Coppermines in September 2019, and The Picts and the Martyrs online in May 2020.

About thirty participants will each be reading a chapter of Winter Holiday, the fourth book in the Swallows and Amazons series, where the children skate and sledge on the frozen lake and plan an expedition to the “North Pole”.

Windermere Jetty Museum holds a number of exhibits relating to Ransome’s work, including the steamship Esperance, currently under renovation, which was the author’s inspiration for Captain Flint’s houseboat in the stories.

The marathon reading of Winter Holiday is free to attend at Windermere Jetty Museum at any time between 10am and 4pm on Sunday 30th January.
