From the makers of Walton’s Secret Water and A Journey Through Constable Country, this new film is an affectionate look at the ancient seaport of Harwich, home of the legendary Mayflower that took the Pilgrim Fathers to the New World.
Mostly shot during the summer of 2019, Portrait of Harwich shows the Harwich Arts and Illuminate Festivals, the Secret Gardens, and international shanty singers on the River Stour, while also recalling memories of wartime Harwich and the 1953 floods.
The film’s producer, David Webb, was born in Mistley and in his youth explored these areas by bicycle. As a staff member at the BBC he won a gold award for his documentary work.
The film is narrated by David’s daughter Victoria Lampard, a news correspondent and presenter on ITV Anglia.
