A radio-controlled model of Nancy Blackett has now been completed thanks to four years’ work by modelmaker Pete Shires.
The approximately 1/8th scale miniature masterpiece has a 3-channel radio control for the mainsail, rudder, and motor, and has already been successfully tested in slightly gusty weather. “She sails very well.” says Pete, “but she may need more ballast.”
The model Nancy Blackett already weighs a hefty 11 kilograms, with the hull having been made by the plank-on-frame method and skinned with glassfibre cloth and resin, with resin also applied inside the hull as waterproofing.
Measuring just 3 feet and 6 inches in length, she is minutely detailed, complete with a fully-fitted out interior, brass fittings and stainless steel (plus fishing tackle snap links) for rigging, and sails made from lightweight Dacron sailcloth.
The interior, which is revealed by lifting off the coachroof, added 12 months to the build time, reckons Pete. He is currently working on making permanent mast hoops, as well as a skipper for the cockpit.
