One of the Lanehead boathouses, from which Arthur Ransome learnt to sail, is for sale. Lanehead was once the home of W.G. Collingwood, with whom he was close friends.
The Collingwoods owned a variety of boats, including a former fishing boat named Swallow, which Ransome later described as "the first of a long dynasty of Swallows in my sailing life." The Collingwood children taught Ransome to sail, and it was this period of his life that was a major inspiration for "Swallows and Amazons".
The Victorian boathouse, reroofed in 2009, includes a storage deck and a sail loft, and is for sale by informal tender with a guide price of £150.000, through Matthews Benjamin of Ambleside.
